2026 Bike Month Celebration At The Market
The City of El Paso celebrated Bike Month 2026 on Saturday, May 23 at San Jacinto Plaza with a family-friendly community event focused on bicycle safety, active transportation, and celebrating the growing cycling culture throughout El Paso.
The event brought together residents of all ages, local bicycle clubs and shops, community organizations, and public agencies for a full day of activities centered around safe and accessible biking. Families and children participated in a bicycle safety rodeo led by the El Paso Police Department Metro Unit, featuring a guided bicycle safety course and interactive learning activities. Attendees also received free bicycle helmets, reflective safety vests, and other practical equipment throughout the day.
Several community bike rides were hosted as part of the event, including 25-mile and 35-mile rides beginning and ending downtown, as well as themed downtown mural and architecture bicycle rides that encouraged participants to experience El Paso’s culture, history, public art, and built environment through movement and exploration.
The event also featured a Downtown Art and Farmers Market with local vendors, community booths, giveaways, music, karaoke, and informational tables hosted by City departments and partner organizations, including TxDOT, UMC, AIA El Paso, local bike advocacy groups, and other community partners committed to promoting safer streets and healthier communities.
An important component of the event was community engagement around the future of bicycle infrastructure in El Paso. Attendees were encouraged to share ideas, concerns, and priorities related to bicycling and active transportation by participating in the City’s Bike Plan Update survey, which will help inform future planning and mobility efforts.
Residents who were unable to attend are still encouraged to participate and share their feedback through the City’s online survey as El Paso continues working toward a safer, more connected, and more accessible bicycle network for all.

El Paso Receives National Safe Routes To School Mini-grant To Support Pedestrian Safety Improvements
The City of El Paso has been selected by the National Center for Safe Routes to School (NCSRS) as one of only three communities nationwide to receive a 2026 Safe Routes mini-grant supporting quick-build pedestrian safety improvements for children and families.
Made possible through support from General Motors (GM), the grant program awards up to $10,000 to communities implementing small-scale, community-driven street safety improvements that encourage safer walking, biking, and active transportation.
In El Paso, the grant will support the installation of quick-build curb extensions near the downtown international port of entry along a high-crash corridor with significant pedestrian activity and connections to nearby schools. As part of the project, local students also participated in a community event where they contributed chalk handprints as part of the temporary street safety installation, helping create a direct visual connection between youth, safety, and public space.
Established in 2006, the National Center for Safe Routes to School works with communities across the country to promote safer and more active transportation for children and families through education, research, technical assistance, and community-based safety programs. The organization also leads national initiatives such as Walk & Roll to School Day and Bike & Roll to School Day while supporting local Safe Routes to School efforts nationwide.
This recognition highlights El Paso’s continued efforts to advance safer, more accessible, and more people-focused streets through quick-build safety projects, active transportation initiatives, and community partnerships. While modest in scale, projects like these can help demonstrate how small, visible improvements may contribute to broader long-term safety and mobility goals throughout the city.
