CoEP Employee Handbook Intern & Volunteer Policy

Volunteer Types

A volunteer is an individual who gives freely of their time, talents and services without expectation of any financial compensation. Volunteers are not City employees and no salary is provided for volunteer services. Volunteers make valuable contributions to the City and its mission to provide exceptional services.

Long-Term Volunteers - Volunteers that plan to contribute a significant amount of time volunteering for the City of El Paso, over the course of one year or more.

Short-Term Volunteers - Volunteers that contribute time with an end date in mind. This includes volunteers in summer internships and 6 to 12-month internships. These positions may include: unpaid interns, Workforce Center interns, court-ordered community service/alternative sentencing volunteers, Eagle Scouts, and service learners.

One-Day Volunteers - Volunteers that contribute time at special events, is in the continuous presence of other adults and has no isolated or unsupervised contact with any member of the public. Often, these volunteers participate with a group, such as: businesses, religious groups, clubs, and other organizations.

Safety & Maintenance

Fire Department

Fire Department

The El Paso Fire Department is a full-service fire department. We respond to all calls involving fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, and other emergency events in the City of El Paso. Specialized teams respond to water, mountain, and technical rescues. The department provides mutual aid to Fort Bliss Military Base and the County of El Paso under the terms of the Mutual Aid Agreements.

El Paso Zoo

Our City of El Paso Zoo Conservation Program is recruiting volunteers to work with our Education Team both virtually and at the Zoo. Education volunteers through the City Volunteer Program at the Zoo get to pick their own hours, attend special meetings where they get to learn more about what is going on at the Zoo and help with all kinds of conservation education projects that best fit with the volunteer’s interest in wildlife and helping to educate others.
