Laura Cruz-Acosta serves as the Strategic Communications Director. Mrs. Cruz-Acosta leads external and internal communications and coordinates communication for City government through the City Manager’s office. In addition, she serves as the City’s primary spokesperson, directs the City’s public information efforts, oversees and manages all of the City’s communications and marketing programs including media relations, public relations, publications, video production and content for the City’s website. Mrs. Cruz-Acosta also oversees the City Clerk’s Office and serves as a council liaison for City Council.
A native El Pasoan, Mrs. Cruz-Acosta joined the City Manager’s leadership team in November 2014 as Assistant to the City Manager.
Prior to joining the City Manager’s Office, Mrs. Cruz-Acosta was the marketing and public information officer for City of El Paso’s Mass Transit Department, Sun Metro. She was instrumental and extraordinarily successful in the bilingual rebranding of the award-winning system.
In addition to having served as the primary spokesperson for Sun Metro, Mrs. Cruz-Acosta coordinated public outreach efforts; was responsible for researching, developing and implementing marketing and advertising opportunities on different platforms; built public-private partnerships to advance the system’s community image; developed internal and external communication programs; managed Sun Metro’s primary brand; and lead the branding and marketing efforts for Sun Metro’s Rapid Transit System, Brio. Under her direction Sun Metro’s marketing section won various marketing awards on different media platforms from various local, regional and national associations.
Before joining the City of El Paso she served as the Public Information Officer for the University of Texas at El Paso and was a reporter for the El Paso Times, specializing in regional military matters. Mrs. Cruz-Acosta graduated cum laude from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication.
