Police Officer (Lateral Transfer) and Certified Police Trainee Information
The application filing period for the 113th Basic Police Officer academy class (Police Trainee and Certified Police Trainee) and 14th Police Officer (Lateral Transfer) academy will be October 19, 2009 thru October 30, 2009. The academies are tentatively scheduled to begin on March 1, 2010. The El Paso Police Department is seeking men and women with law enforcement experience to join the ranks of El Paso’s finest. This program is open to officers within the State of Texas as well as officers from other states. Officers from outside of the State of Texas are required to obtain their TCLEOSE license by their time of appointment with the EPPD. Out-of-State license information can be obtained by going to the following link http://www.tcleose.state.tx.us/. Those who qualify for the position of Police Officer (Lateral Transfer) will attend a five-week training academy. Certified Police Trainee candidates (TCLEOSE license holder who does not have one-year of full-time experience) will attend the twenty six-week basic peace officer training academy. Certified Police Trainee candidates will not be required to take the State of Texas (TCLEOSE) exam while attending the academy. Police Officer (Lateral Transfer)
To qualify for this program, Officers must pass the written examination, pre-offer physical fitness exam, and comprehensive background investigation to include psychological, polygraph, medical and drug screening. Officers must meet the following criteria:
Education and Experience: Graduation from the El Paso Police Academy, or one (1) year of commissioned police officer experience in a law enforcement agency.
Licenses and Certificates: Basic Peace Officers license issued by TCLEOSE in compliance with state statute by time of appointment.
Pay: Police Officers (Lateral Transfers) entry level salary with the El Paso Police Department will be based upon the number of years of full-time experience in law enforcement, up to $57,835.44 annually.
Certified Police Trainee
To qualify for this program, Certified Police Trainees must pass the written exam, complete an, pre-offer physical fitness exam, and background investigation to include psychological, polygraph, medical and drug-screening. The following criteria must be met:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by 12 postsecondary semester credit hours in any field of study and completion of a Basic Peace Officers course of study accredited by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
Licenses and Certificates: Basic Peace Officers License issued by TCLEOSE by the time of application. Texas Class "C" driver's license or equivalent from another state at the time of application.
Pay: Certified Police Trainee’s will receive $15.50 hour while attending the training academy and $35,455.94 annual starting salary upon academy graduation.
