Newton Stewart, Mounted Patrolman
Born: 1875
Died February 17, 1900
Newton Stewart

Officer Newton Stewart died on Saturday morning, February 17th, 1900 during a jail break attempt. Two “colored” soldiers had been arrested for drunk and disorderly and a squad of “colored” soldiers stationed at Ft. Bliss attempted to free them. Officer Stewart, the only police officer on duty at the police station on Overland Street that night, was shot by the soldiers. A jailer who was on duty fired at the soldiers and struck one of them. The soldier was found dead about 100 feet from the police station. Three soldiers were later arrested and court-martialed. Officer Stewart was 25 years old when he died and was the son of W.T. Stewart, a mining man. Source: El Paso Daily Times

The only verified photograph of Newton Stewart was from his days with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.  Photo courtesy of Jeff Heatley and the Theodore Roosevelt Archive at Harvard Museum.
