On Saturday afternoon, May 16th, 29 year old
Henry Early Friar, a TWC Philosophy student, fired a shot from a rifle into
a Dairy Queen at 3530 Dyer because he was angry for being refused a job.
He fled to his home at 9000 Newman Rd. where he took shelter. Officer Warren
Mitchell, his partner M.M. Cicchetti and motorcycle officer William P. Kearby
responded to the call from the Dairy Queen. When the officers arrived, a
witness told them he knew the man and directed the officers to Friar’s house.
When the officers arrived at the house, Friar came out the front door and
started shooting at the officers. Officer Mitchell went to the patrol car
to radio for help but was shot in the head, while inside the car, and before
he could make the call. He died instantly. The Officer Kearby was able to
call for help and scores of Police, Sheriff and State Highway Officers responded.
The law enforcement officers were able to get Friar out of the house by
using tear gas. Friar was arrested after a gun battle of about one hour.
Mitchell, a 2 year veteran of the Police Department and World War II veteran
was survived by his wife Jane. Friar’s explanation to police was “I got
mad… I shot the officer, that’s all”. Source: El Paso Times
