Rafael Marmolejo, Jr, Detective
Born: December 29, 1922
End of Watch: March 17, 1951

Detective Ralph Marmalejo and his partner, Frank Goreman, spotted two suspicious individuals walking into the railroad tracks behind 1830 Bassett Avenue. It was Saturday, March 17th, at 9:00 p.m. when Detective Goreman and Detective Marmolejo split up in order to better search the tracks. Oscar Pichardo, an ex-convict from California was one of the suspicious men. He and his buddy, Alberto Salas, tried to hide from the two officers. Pichardo, who was armed with a handgun, stated that he only wanted to scare the Detective so he could escape. Instead, Pichardo shot Detective Marmalejo in the abdomen. Detective Marmolejo returned fire and shot Pichardo twice, seriously wounding him. Detective Marmolejo died shortly after arriving at Southwestern Memorial Hospital. Pichardo and Salas were charged with Murder. Marmolejo was survived by his wife, 3 month old daughter Norma and 21 month daughter Cecelia. Detective Marmolejo was a 5 year veteran of the El Paso Police Department when he died. Source: El Paso Herald Post.
