James Gillett served as a Texas Ranger from June
1875 to December 1881. He served as El Paso City Marshal from June
1882 to April 1885; he resigned his post after "clubbing a city councilman
with a six-shooter". In 1921 he wrote "Six Years with the Texas
Rangers"; in 1928 it was condensed as "The Texas Rangers" and it was used as
a text book in public schools in 17 states. Photo above circa 1879.
