WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?

Domestic violence” or “family violence” means an act by a member of a family or household against another member that is intended to result in physical harm, bodily injury, assault, sexual assault, or a threat that places that member in fear of such harm.
Family or household members must:
  • be related by marriage – either traditional or common law (spouse);

  • be former spouses;

  • be related by blood (parents, children);

  • be members of the same household (roommates);

  • be former members of the same household;

  • be the biological parents of a child, whether or not they are married or never lived together; or be the foster parents of a child.

MISSION OF THE EL PASO POLICE DEPARTMENT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UNIT
To provide the employees of the El Paso Police Department with proper training in domestic violence issues - including proper response, officer safety, empathy for victims; and provide information on domestic violence to the general public, media, community organizations, educational and medical institutions to increase public awareness.
 

UNIT ACTIVITIES

  • Conduct pre-service and in-service training for officers and civilian employees

  • Conduct presentations for the general public

  • Work in conjunction with other agencies regarding domestic violence

  • Attend meetings and forums dealing with domestic violence

  • Research domestic violence issues

  • Review all domestic violence cases reported to the Department

  • Assist Department employees, the general public, the media, and other agencies with information on domestic violence

  • Conduct shift meetings for Department employees on current domestic violence issues
