John J. Coleman, Burglary Detective
Born: 1867
End of Watch: July 14, 1924

Detective John J. Coleman was killed in a mystery attack that remains unanswered today. On Monday morning, July 14th, 1924. According to the lone witness to the murder, a Ford had turned onto Copia from Tularosa and then stopped at Grama Street. The witness, who was mowing his lawn at the time, saw the car stop and heard the engine stop. The witness then heard several shots fired and a man scream. The witness did not see who fired the shots, but when he went over to the car, he saw Detective John Coleman, lying dead inside the car. No suspects were ever developed and the case went unsolved. Detective Coleman was survived by his wife and at least one son, Jack. The Mayor of El Paso offered a job on the Police Department to Detective Coleman’s 23 year old son and Coleman’s widow was the first to receive a benefit from a newly taken out life insurance policy for the city. Mrs. Coleman received $2000.00.  Source: El Paso Herald
