Civilian Employment

Civilian Employment The El Paso Police Department is comprised of over 1,300 officers and civilians. The civilian personnel perform vital jobs and if not for these dedicated men and women, the El Paso Police Department would not function. Persons interested in viewing job descriptions for non-uniformed positions such as Public Safety Communicator, Police Toxicologist, Latent Print Examiner, Police Records Specialist and Property and Evidence Specialist, should visit the City of El Paso’s Job Opportunities web page at http://agency.governmentjobs.com/elpaso/default.cfm.

All applications and job descriptions, including those for the Police Department are available online. The steps below provide applicants with a better understanding of our hiring process.
Civilian Employment Step 1: Initial Application: Complete & submit an application online through the City of El Paso’s Job Opportunities web page. Candidates must be thorough and ensure to attach any copies of certificates and/or transcripts. We encourage candidates to note the exam date and review the job description; there may be a supplement or study guide attached. Also, some of our positions have several components that require the candidate to pass one component before proceeding onto the next one.

Step 2: Receive Disposition via email: All correspondence is sent via email. It will be sent to the email address provided in the account profile. Candidates should check their email frequently to obtain status information such as qualifying for the position or scheduling of exams.
Step 3: Report for the exam: The correspondence received will state the time, date and location of the exam. We utilize different testing sites so candidates should be sure to arrive at the correct exam site.

Step 4: Receive Disposition via email: As previously noted, all correspondence is sent via email. Exam results will be emailed within 30 to 60 days after the date of the exam. Individuals who achieve a passing grade on the written exam, may be scheduled for the next exam component (such as a Spanish proficiency test) or may have their names placed on the eligible list.

Step 5: Interview: Candidates are contacted for interviews according to their rank on the eligible list. The phone number listed in the account profile is what will be used for contact information.

Step 6: Background Investigation: Candidates who are chosen for a position and given a conditional job offer will be required to go through a background investigation.

Please contact the Human Resources Division at (915) 564-6958 for additional information.
