On Friday morning at 8:35 a.m., Officer Wayne
Carreon was directing traffic on I-10 West near the Cotton Street exit at
a traffic accident. Twenty-one year old Hector Magana was driving a dump
truck approaching the accident scene. The dump truck struck officer Carreon
and threw him across the lane of traffic. The dump truck continued through
and struck another car then stopped after colliding with a patrol car. Carreon
was rushed to Hotel Dieu Hospital with serious head injuries where he later
died. Magana was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Motor
Vehicle. Officer Carreon is survived by his wife. His brother, Luis, is
also an El Paso Police officer. Source: El Paso Times
