The Scherr Legate Celebration of Lights also has a special tradition that goes back to 1994 with Candlelighters of El Paso as each year the organization selects a child that will flip the switch along with the current Mayor (Mayor Dee Margo) and title sponsor (Scherr Legate) to light up downtown with the many lights, decorations and family themed ornaments that dominate the heart of downtown in San Jacinto Plaza.

The Scherr Legate Celebration of Lights is hosted and organized by the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department along with many other city and civic partners making for a tremendous partnership along with Destination El Paso with the famed WINTERFEST.
