MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

THE CITY OF EL PASO, TEXAS
(1873-Present)

On June 18, 1873, an act to incorporate the municipality of El Paso was passed by the Texas State Legislature at Austin, Texas, and Joseph Magoffin and Samuel Schutz were appointed commissioners to hold an election for city officials for the City of El Paso.

Gillett resigned, while Joseph Schutz failed to qualify; a special election was held on October 15, 1873 to fill these seats on the City (then known as the Board of Aldermen), which resulted in the election of M.A. Jones as Alderman, 1st Ward; Allen Blacker and Dr. T.J. Tajes, Alderman, 2nd Ward; and Frank C. Marsh, Alderman, 3rd Ward.

Mayor Lightbody resigned April 18, 1889, in the face of an unruly mob that had taken charge of City Hall. G.E. Hubbard was appointed Mayor by City City to finish the term, April 18 1889-June 28, 1889.

Adolph Krakauer was elected Mayor but was later disqualified on account of being a non-citizen. During this same election a tie vote also resulted between candidates for Alderman of of 3rd Ward, Richard Caples and H.A. True. A special election was then held on June 28, 1889 and resulted in the election of Richard Caples as Mayor and H.A. True as Alderman of the 3rd Ward for the 1889-1891 term.

Mayor Sweeney resigned on April 28, 1910 and William F. Robinson was elected by City to fill out the unexpired term as Mayor. Percy McGhee was also elected Alderman by City to fill out Robinson’s unexpired term. Mayor Robinson was killed by a falling wall at a fire at Calisher’s Store on Texas Street and Ware Avenue on August 14,1910, and Charles E. “Henry” Kelly was elected Mayor by City on August 18, 1910 to fill out the unexpired term.
