Countdown to the 100Th. Anniversary of the
Mexican Revolution
Binational Mexican Revolution Month


The 2007 Binational Mexican Revolution Month is a part of the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department – Cultural and Heritage Tourism’s Countdown to the 100Th. Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution initiative. It is conducted in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in close partnership with the Universidad Autónoma de Cd. Juárez UACJ, the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center and School at Ft. Bliss, the Pancho Villa Museum, Columbus, New México, El Paso Public Library (Main), with funding from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Mexican Revolution Month is a series of free events taking place in November 2007 to celebrate El Paso-Juarez rich heritage and to heighten community awareness on the important role the sister cities played in the unfolding of the Mexican Revolution.

Friday, November 9
11:00 a.m. - Mexican Revolution Month Inauguration and Press Conference

The Consulate General of Mexico and the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department will inaugurate the Mexican Revolution Month with a press conference at the Consulate General offices, 910 E.San Antonio Ave., El Paso, Texas 79901, (915) 533-8555.

Saturday, November 10
8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Historical Tour
Mexican Revolution Historical Tour in Columbus, New Mexico - The Raid of Columbus, NM by Villa’s forces and the U.S. Military Response.

The tour, led by John A. Hamilton, Command Historian from the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center and School at Ft. Bliss, will travel to Columbus, NM to provide a narrative account of the U.S. response to Villa's 1916 raid on Columbus. A tour of the Pancho Villa Museum in Columbus and lunch at The Pink Store in Palomas, Mex. follows the battlefield and Museum tour. Fee: $60 Adults; $45 Military/Seniors/ Children. Wednesday, November 14
6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Lecture - 1910 – Art in Times of Revolution by Dr. Michael Tomor, Director, El Paso Museum of Art.

At the start of the Mexican Revolution (1910) the then President, Porfirio Diaz had been in power for more than 30 years. Few signs if any had been shown by 1910 of the far- reaching revolution in Mexican art which came to include such figures as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, the three greatest of Mexico's world-renowned muralists. This lecture will discuss the world of art that influenced stylistic directions in Mexican art before and during the Revolution and the great Mexican artists of that generation as well as new directions in art North American and in Europe preceding World War I (1914), the next revolution in art. “Historia de Dos Ciudades – El Paso- Ciudad Juárez”
Panel presentation by Pedro Siller, Professor, Universidad Autonóma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) and Dr. Troy Ainsworth, Historic Preservation Officer for the City of El Paso. The members of this panel will discuss the pivotal role the sister cities, and the region, played in the unfolding of the Mexican Revolution. Universidad Autónoma de Cd. Juárez, Main Library. Friday, November 16 and
7:30 PM - Mexico 1910 by Ballet Folklórico Paso del Norte
will render an energetic and authentic performance depicting the art, history, sights and sounds of Mexico during the 1910 period. Come and celebrate Mexican Revolution Month with this authentic and mesmerizing performance which takes place on an elaborate and realistic stage. General Admission $10.00. Film Festival (In Spanish)

Special guest Yolanda Mercader, Movie and Documentary Film Professor from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana of Mexico, will introduce films and offer commentary and an opportunity to the public to ask questions after the movies. These films are the only three Mexican films that offer a totally different and true panorama of the Mexican Revolution. The films date from the early 30’s and are some of the first sound movies. 1:45 p.m. Prisionero Número 13- 1933 Mexican Film that deals with a father’s dilemma (a Federal) and his son (a Revolucionario), which as in many families, are divided ideologically. But what happens when the father finds his son among his prisoners and on what does he bases his decision to execute him – his military principles and ideology, or the love for his son?

3:15 p.m. "Mexican Revolution Sites in El Paso" Film Introduction and talk by Jackson Polk and Fred Morales
3:30 p.m. "Mexican Revolution Sites in El Paso" A Walking Tour with Leon Metz and Fred Morales. From 1910 to 1920 the Mexican Revolution captured world attention as Pancho Villa led military attacks on Juarez, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. Villa and Mexican revolutionary leaders met in El Paso to plan and equip their armies. Refugees from the battle crowded into El Paso as hundreds of international journalists and photographers filled El Paso hotels to report on the revolution. It was one of the most historic conflicts in North America, and spectators in El Paso sometimes got shot. See many historic photos from the Mexican Revolution and walk with El Paso historians Leon Metz and Fred Morales to learn how events in El Paso were crucial to the revolution, and where Pancho Villa liked to hang out in downtown El Paso. 12:30 p.m. Mexican Revolution Camp Re-enactment
Experience a traditional Mexican Revolution Camp with a professional troupe of actors and singers form Eden Enterprises in collaboration with Balet Folkorico Paso del Norte and the Desperado of San Elizario. Listen to some of the most popular Corridos and portrayals of famous revolution characters at Cleveland Square on Franklin and Santa Fe Streets. Information at 541-4942.

1:45 p.m. - Compadre Mendoza – 1933 Mexican film – This film is about the typical stubborn Mexican who wants to be in good terms with Emiliano Zapata and his revolutionaries as well as with General Victoriano Huerta’s Federal Government. A two faced man lacking in principles who is only interested in the revolution as a business venture. Information at 541-4942.
