The Mayor’s 100 Teens for 2009-2010
The Mayor’s 100 Teens for 2009-2010
I am very pleased to introduce to our community the fourth generation of the 2009-2010 class of the The Mayor’s 100 Teens. 100 teens were selected but only 92 could accept the challenge at this time. This group is the fourth generation of the program, which is targeted at recognizing youth within the El Paso community who have overcome adversity, provided service to others, achieved something significant and who lead by example. An initiation banquet for this next generation of The Mayor’s 100 Teens will take place later this fall, with the Teens being involved in the program for one year. Activities in which the Teens participate in throughout the year include major public events, public speaking opportunities and community action/service projects and initiatives.
These teenagers are from very diverse backgrounds and have conquered so much – disease or disability, fractured families, the loss of parents and more. Yet they give generously and with a tireless spirit to those around them; gifts of times, talent and simple caring. Their stories reveal a precious hope and potential for the future.
It is important that we encourage the teenagers’ continued good work and inspire others to follow in their own way. I am positive that this will help shape many lives and contribute in building our future leaders.
Sincerely,

About The Program

TO POTENTIAL SPONSORS
Dear Potential Sponsor:
We are in the fourth year of “The Mayor’s 100 Teens” program and it has been a total success! The membership in the program has continuously increased from 56 teens in our first year to 87 in our third year. “The Mayor’s 100 Teens” is a program to recognize and commend our youth for their important contributions to the community around them. Many of these kids achieve significant goals by overcoming obstacles in their lives which often go unnoticed. This program provides a forum to recognize our youth and allows them to become a positive role model to others.
Donations graciously provided by the business community have allowed us to finance the entire program and all of its activities without using taxpayer money. Teens participate with my wife and me on a monthly basis when we prepare and serve meals at various shelters in the city. Last year, the teens promoted the “Teens in the Driver Seat” program at their high schools; this is an awareness program about the dangers of driving and how to avoid them. They also participated in Global Youth Service day; the largest service event in the world where the youth unites to volunteer for service projects throughout the community. For that event, the teens did a community clean-up around City Hall and made major remodeling to a non-profit shelter for women and children. The teens also take an active part in community parades. The goals of these programs are to keep our youth active in their community and focused in school and positive activities. It is important that we encourage the teenagers’ continued good work and inspire others to follow their lead. I am positive that this will help shape many lives and contribute in developing our future leaders.
Throughout the year, I seek sponsors to donate time, in-kind services and/or monetary resources in order to honor the next generation of teens. The idea is to reward the teens with free products and/or services from businesses in town. The teens and sponsors are recognized at a banquet held in October. Sponsors are thanked with an advertisement in a beautiful yearbook that displays all the teens and their stories; the yearbook is presented at the banquet.
If you have any questions regarding the program, call Diana Nuñez at (915) 541-4145 or email her at nunezdx@elpasotexas.gov. Feel free to visit the website at www.elpasotexas.gov/mayor/teens.asp. If you make a monetary donation, please make checks payable to the “City of El Paso”, and mail to the City of El Paso, The Mayor’s 100 Teens, 10th floor of City Hall, 2 Civic Center Plaza, El Paso TX 79901.
I would like to thank you in advance for your commitment in serving our community. Thank you, and now, let’s make the “The Mayor’s 100 Teens” program a total success year after year!
Sincerely,
John F. Cook
