Dear Citizens / Potential Sponsors,

The Mayor's 100's TeensAs I travel our great community, I constantly hear, read or witness something outstanding that a teenager did and I wish that there would be a way to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishment of that outstanding young person. Therefore, I implemented a program that has worked in Colorado Springs called “The Mayor’s 100 Teens”. Now we are in the third year of “The Mayor’s 100 Teens” program and it has been a total success.  The membership in the program has been continuously increasing from 56 to 83 teens in the last two generations.  “The Mayor’s 100 Teens” is a program to recognize and praise our youth for their important contributions to the world around them.  Many of these kids achieve significant goals by overcoming obstacles in their lives and often go unnoticed.  This program provides a forum to recognize our youth and allows them to become a positive role model to others.

Gracious donations from the business community have allowed us to finance the entire program and all of its activities without using taxpayer money.  Some of the activities that the teens have participated in are several community parades such as the “Holiday Light Parade” where the teens rode in a Christmas-decorated Sun Metro trolley, Veterans parade, Northeast Easter parade, 9/11 parade and the Rodeo parade.  They also participate with my wife and me on a monthly basis feeding the homeless and persons in need around the community.

In addition, this year the teens will be doing community clean-ups and promoting the “Teens in the Driver Seat” program at their high school; this is an awareness program about the dangers of driving and how to avoid them.  The goal of this program is to keep our youth active in their community and focused in school and positive activities.  It is important that we encourage the teenagers’ continued good work and inspire others to follow their lead.  I am positive that this will help shape many lives and contribute in developing our future leaders.

Throughout the year, I seek sponsors to donate time, in-kind services and/or monetary resources in order to honor the next generation of teens.  The idea is to reward the teens with free products and/or services from businesses in town.  The teens and sponsors get recognized at a banquet held each October.  Sponsors are thanked with an advertisement in a yearbook that displays all the teens and their stories and passed out at the banquet.

If you have any questions regarding the program, call Diana Nuñez at (915) 541-4145 or email her at nunezdx@elpasotexas.gov.  Feel free to visit the website at www.elpasotexas.gov/mayor/teens.asp.  If you make a monetary donation, please make checks payable to the “City of El Paso”, and mail to the City of El Paso, The Mayor’s 100 Teens, 10th floor of City Hall, 2 Civic Center Plaza, El Paso TX  79901.

I am thankful to the community, the businesses and the education system for the strong support in making this program a success and for the interest in our youth.

Thank you,
John F. Cook, Mayor of El Paso
