FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them. They make the impossible happen.  --Dr. Robert Jarvik

A REFLECTION

If you expect nothing, you’re apt to be surprised. You’ll get it. --Malcolm Forbes

FAIRY GODMOTHER VISITS DOWNTOWN
by Mayor John Cook

While many El Pasoans have become excited about the prospect of our downtown undergoing revitalization, most have understood the many challenges we would certainly face on what we knew would be a long journey. The initial planning and community input process was sometimes painful and took over a year before we had a “skeletal” plan in hand. Read More...

CHARACTER FIRST!
by Laurie Huffman

Character Quality of the Month – PERSUASIVENESS

If you are watching the news, issues of character keep coming up. It seems that character does matter. Why? Because the most accurate predictor of a person's future behavior is his or her character. Retired General H. Norman Schwarzkopf has said, "There are two fundamental secrets to leadership--take charge and do what's right. That's when character comes into play." Read More...

ANIMAL SERVICES’ “PET CARE-A-VAN” COMING TO LOCATION NEAR YOU—APRIL 2008 DATES

Animal Services Pet Care Van

The Pet Care-A-Van is a mobile van operated by the City of El Paso Department of Public Health’s Animal Services that provides free spay and neuter surgeries. Did you know that more than 18,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in El Paso each year due to irresponsible pet ownership and pet overpopulation? Animal Services is committed to promoting and protecting the health, safety and welfare of pets in El Paso, but we need the community's help to do it. By having your dog or cat sterilized, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens. In addition, spaying or neutering does more than help solve the problem of overpopulation. It actually protects pets from many health problems and helps them live a longer, happier life.

Owners desiring to have their pet spayed or neutered must be present at the Pet Care-A-Van location at 7:00 am. We can accommodate a maximum of 25 pets each day on a first-come first-served basis.

Pets may drink water up until the time of surgery, but should not have solid food after 8:00 pm the night before spaying/neutering.

Pets that are undergoing surgery must also receive rabies vaccinations ($9.00), be registered/licensed ($8.00), and be microchipped ($15.00) as required by Animal Ordinances.

MAYOR’S BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM UPDATE

MAYOR'S BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM

MAYOR’S BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM

Message from Mayor Cook:

Sincere thanks to all of the City Employees who donated at the latest blood drive held on
April 25, 2008, at City Hall.
66 people registered to donate which resulted in 66 units of lifesaving blood for our community.
This is the gift that really does keep on giving!
Give blood. Be a hero.
Save a life.

Mayor’s top 10 Reasons for giving blood:

  1. One pint of donated blood can save 3 lives.
  2. 1 in 5 people entering the hospital needs blood.
  3. 60% of people in the U. S. are eligible to donate blood, but only 5 do.
  4. Someone needs blood every 2 seconds.
  5. Giving blood will not decrease your strength.
  6. Blood centers run short of types O and B blood.
  7. 4.5 million American lives are saved each year by blood transfusions.
  8. Since a pint = 1 lb., you lose 1 pound every time you donate.
  9. There is no substitute for human blood.
  10. You’ve helped save a life—maybe of someone you know.
