Join us at the
El Paso Public Library for the fourth annual
Celebrate the Arts. Meet authors
from El Paso and Las Cruces who write
fiction and nonfiction books for children
and adults. Meet visual artists of unique
photography, oil paintings, basket weaving,
panoramas of El Paso, jewelry, and
hand-woven art. Participants include: LC
Hayden, Donna Munch, The Three Amigos,
Maritza Jauregui, LB McKay, Oscar Moya, and
many more.
Write a poem for a loved one, and buy one of
a kind Mother’s Day gifts. We will also
sell used books and have readings and art
demonstrations, as well as kids’
activities.
The El Paso
Writers’ League has been encouraging,
inspiring, and supporting writers since
1935. We are a diverse group of published
and unpublished writers. Once a month our
meetings consist of writing workshops and
guest speakers. We encourage members to
join critique groups. We sponsor three
annual public events: Junior Jotters (a
writing camp for school age children), a
writing contest for League members, and
Celebrate the Arts.

The Armijo
Library presents the films of John Hughes.
John Hughes, who disappeared from the
Hollywood scene in 1991, is credited with
creating a whole genre of 1980's teenage

The El Paso Public
Library’s Summer Reading Club (SRC)
kicks-off on Saturday, June 6, 2008 at all
public library facilities. The theme for
this year is, "Texas Reading Club Jubilee:
1958-2008" celebrating 50 years of the Texas
Summer Reading Club. Children just
completing the 5th Grade and are age 12
and under are eligible to participate.
(Youth who are entering the 7th Grade or are
13 years and older may participate in the
Teen Summer Reading Club) |
|
|
It is easy to join! Simply visit any public
library, fill out a registration form and
start reading. Kids are encouraged to read
just 8 books or 8 hours depending on their
reading level. At the end of Summer Reading
Club, each child who meets or exceeds these
goals will receive a certificate of
completion. Some branches offer other
reading incentives such as prizes, goodie
bags and toys for those completing the
program. |

The Summer Reading Club
also has hundreds of special programs for
young people and families throughout the
summer such as karaoke, storytelling and
virtual reality demonstrations. Still other
programs offer children and parents insight
into El Paso history, law enforcement, fire
prevention and water safety. |
|
Summer Reading Club is
just one of the ways parents can help
children fight "summer learning lag". The
phrase refers to the period of time between
school sessions when children’s cognitive
development slows due to the lack of
academic instruction. Programs such as
the Summer Reading Club help curb summer
learning lag by exercising children’s brains. The best part is, all the programs
are free.
For more information on Summer
Reading Club call your local branch library, visit the
Kids Zone or call
Laurel Indalecio at (915) 543-5470.
