I'm Learning! -
¡Estoy Aprendiendo! |
 |
Newborns are now getting their
library card and first book even before they learn to crawl.
This makes them the youngest library users in El Paso. |
|
The El Paso Public Library has
started the program, I'm Learning! - ¡Estoy
Aprendiendo!, through a grant from the
Paso Del Norte Health Foundation. The program kicked-off at
Thomason Hospital in early December of 2001, and it has, as its
goal, to promote literacy among parents and newborns. It is
hoped this program will break the cycle of illiteracy, which is
at 37% in El Paso, compared to 23% for the state. |
|
The Library thinks it can
accomplish this objective by introducing infants to
books--which it knows will give them
an edge as soon as they are born--while making parents aware of
services the library provides.
Many studies have reported the
advantages of reading to children, especially during their first
three years, stating it helps stimulate brain development and
guarantees a higher success rate in school. |
 |
 |
The El Paso Public Library concurs
with the
American Academy of Pediatrics that parents should make
reading to their infants a daily activity. For more information on I'm
Learning! - ¡Estoy Aprendiendo!, please contact
