FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a library/replacement card?
To get a library card simply come to any public library facility with a picture I.D. and proof of residence. Usually a utility bill with your home address will suffice as your proof of residence. If you have no picture I.D. you will need two forms of I.D. and proof of residence. Parent or guardian must accompany kids under 13. Military personnel and their dependents may show their military ID when applying for a library card. Replacement cards cost $1.00 for a child and $2.00 for an adult.

I have a book that is 13 years overdue.  Am I in big trouble?
Although the public library does encourage and applaud conscientious library users, we do understand problems may arise. Don’t worry; the maximum fine we charge for an overdue item is $5.00. Come to your nearest Branch library and speak to the manager about the situation and while there, renew your library card!

What do you charge for Internet use and what do I need to get on-line?
There is no charge to use the Internet. Internet users must sign in and provide their name and address along with some form of ID. Children 17 years old and younger must have a signed parental permission form on file to use the Internet.
Can I renew books over the phone?
Yes!  Books may be renewed multiple times in person, over the phone, or on the Internet as long as no one else has placed a request for that item and is waiting for it. All you need to do is provide your library card number to the attendant, together with the item barcodes.
Do you have an online catalog/Website? How can I use it?
Yes. The library’s online catalog SOL (Services On-Line) is available by clicking on the “Catalog or My Account” on our website's menu. You can obtain a pin number only by visiting your nearest library branch and presenting a valid library card and picture I.D. The Library Web site also contains information about library programs and services.
Can I return materials to any location?
Yes!  Please make sure to return material by the due date to avoid late charges.
Can I request books from outside of your system?
EPPL’s Inter-Library Loan (ILL) program allows system users to request items from throughout the World. You can request books at any library facility, or call 543-5458 and ask for the ILL department when making such a request.
How much does it cost to make copies/prints?
Copies and prints cost 10 cents per page, for black & white.
Do you have old copies of the El Paso Times and Herald Post?
Yes!  They are located in the Periodicals Department at the Main Library. Call 543-5433 for more information. You can also search our Newspaper Headline and Obituary Database.
What is the hiring/volunteer process?
All hiring procedures are handled through the City of El Paso Human Resources Department. Information is available by calling 541-4504.   Volunteers should contact their nearest library facility manager and inquire as to what their needs are and what forms are necessary.
Do you have ESL, GED or Citizenship Classes?
Yes!  EPPL provides classes and resources for personal improvement that are available throughout the year. Call the literacy hotline at 543-5494 for information on classes nearest you.
How much are fines for late fees?
All over due items are charged at 15¢ per day beginning the day after the item is due.
What do I have to do to use your meeting room?
All of EPPL’s meeting room facilities are available for public use. The rooms must be reserved ahead of time to insure availability. They are free of charge provided the use is not for a business endeavor. A nominal business rate will apply for business users. Meeting room use is subject to review by library administration.  Please call the library you are interested in for more information.
Does the library offer faxing services?
EPPL currently does not offer faxing services.
How can I get information on programs?
A calendar of events is available at all El Paso Public library facilities during normal working hours and on the Library's Home Page.  Branch or Library department events are also listed on the individual pages. Children's storytimes and programs are also shown on each library's page in the Kids Zone
