What is Metal
Repoussé?
|
The ancient art
of embossing or
pressing shapes
into metal to
create a design.
This process has
been used for
thousands of
years to make
everything from
jewelry to
religious icons.
This technique
arrived in
Mexico out of
the necessity to
protect the
icons of the
churches from
the chandelier
smoke, the
environment, and
time itself. |

Russian Nomad
Leopard
by Brant Berry |
At the present
time, repoussé
has developed to
the point of
becoming an art
of great
splendor, born
in the hands of
expert craftsmen
who with their
ability and
creativity,
manage to turn a
metal leaf into
a true work of
art.
Helped by
instruments
called striker
pins, they
manage to print
in a metal leaf
figures in low
relief and up to
three-dimensions.
Paint is
sometimes added
to add depth or
to highlight the
artwork. |

|
Please note - Our
workshops for children will
use child friendly tools and
materials. This workshop is
not recommended for children
under the age of 7 years.
It is suggested that the
children wear older clothing
or smocks/aprons to cover
their clothing. |
