Library
Receives BIG READ Grant |
The El Paso Public Library is pleased to
announce that it has received a $20,000
grant from the National Endowment for
the Arts (NEA) in conjunction with the
Institute for Museums and Library
Services (IMLS) and Arts Midwest. The
funds will be used to organize a
city-wide reading campaign featuring the
classic science fiction novel,
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury.
The El Paso Public Library and its local
partners, The El Paso Museums and
Cultural Affairs Department and others
will be asking residents of El Paso and
surrounding communities to read the book
during March 2008 and take part in the
many community events, such as book
discussions, movie nights, concerts and
other activities, happening throughout
the city.
Bradbury, who recently became the first
science-fiction writer to receive a
Pulitzer Prize, published Fahrenheit
451 in 1953. In it, he envisioned a
world where books were gradually
stripped of all possible offending
passages until only the footnotes were
left. His futuristic setting also
contained an interactive form of color
television on flat screens that hung on
walls. Even though the novel contains
themes of censorship, Bradbury has often
said that the book is a story about the
love of books and libraries. It has also
been said that much of the book was
written on a rented typewriter in the
basement of the Powell Library at UCLA.
El Paso was one of just 127 communities
across the U.S. to receive the award. In
addition to the money grant, the Library
will also receive reader’s guides,
teacher’s guides, audio guides and
promotional material to distribute to
schools and other participating
organizations. Schools and organizations
wishing to take part should call
543-5468 for more information. |
