Important Changes Regarding the Library’s Computer Use Procedures

Starting on Monday, September 10, 2007 the El Paso Public Library will be making important changes to its computer use procedures. Some of the more significant changes are as follows:
  1. All El Paso area residents wishing to use the library’s public access computers will be asked for a library card to sign onto a new PC management system. Visitors from outside the area will be issued temporary guest passes. Patrons will not be denied access to the public access computers if they don’t have or don’t want a library card. Having a card will only make the system easier to use.

  2. The new system will automate the process of signing up to use a computer and will automatically manage the time a patron uses the system. It will also automate the process of printing from the computers.

  3. Filtered and unfiltered computer sessions will be available. Parents/guardians will have the option of requesting filtered Internet sessions for their children.

  4. Filtered Internet sessions must be requested on an updated Internet Permission Form. Internet Permission Forms are required to be read and signed by a child’s parent or guardian before a child can access the Internet. The designation can be changed simply by notifying library staff.

  5. Parents wishing to update their child’s existing Internet Permission Form to reflect either filtered or unfiltered sessions should do so as soon as possible as all sessions will remain unfiltered until parents make the request.

A library card is easy to get. Simply visit any El Paso Public Library facility and bring a picture I.D. and proof of current residence. Most cards are granted within the hour. A parent or guardian must accompany children younger than 14 years old. El Paso Public Library cards are free to all residents of the State of Texas, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The cards are good for two years and may be renewed after that for another two years. For more information call you nearest branch library.
