In
1997, at the request of renowned children’s author Pat Mora, the
El Paso Public Library, and the Parks and Recreation Department
began the tradition of holding an annual festival to celebrate
the youth of El Paso, Texas. The festival had two primary
goals. One was to create a family event that people of all
cultural, social, and economic backgrounds could attend and
enjoy. The other was to promote the importance of literacy and
education. That event drew 500 people to the Armijo Library.

En 1997, y a
pedido de la reconocida autora de libros juvelines Pat Mora, la
Biblioteca Pública de El Paso y el Departamento de Parques y
Recreación dieron inicio al festival anual para la celebración
de la juventud de El Paso, Texas. Dicho festival tenía dos
objetivos primarios. Primero, el crear un evento familiar del
cual todas las personas de diferentes condiciones, cultural,
social y económica, puedan participar y disfrutar. El segundo
objetivo era el promover la importancia del alfabetismo y la
educación. El evento atrajo a más de 500 personas a la
Biblioteca Armijo. De este modo había nacido El Día de los Niños
/ Día de los Libros. |

| This year,
the event will celebrated its 14th year and has grown to
include the participation of hundreds of organizations from El
Paso and the surrounding area. In 2006, it was estimated that
over 30,000 people attended the celebration now held at
Washington Park. During the last 7 years, organizers have given
away over 50,000 books and goodie bags filled with fruit, toys
and educational material to the children who have attended.
This effort helped bring the love of books and reading to
children who might not otherwise have had that opportunity. |

Este año, el
evento celebrará su 14th aniversario, y ha crecido de
tal modo a incluir la participación de cientos de organizaciones
de El Paso y áreas circunvecinas. En 2006, se ha estimado que
más de 30.000 personas participaron de la celebración, la cual
es ahora realizada en el Washington Park. Durante los últimos 7
años, los organizadores han donado más de 50.000 libros, además
de bolsas llenas de frutas, juguetes y materiales educativos a
los niños que asistieron a dicho evento. |

If you
have a group who would like to participate in either the parade
or the event in 2008, call 543-5468. Event booths are free but everyone
is asked to provide games and prizes for the children who take
part. No one will be allowed to charge any amount except
nominal fees if you are a food or beverage vendor.
Si usted tiene o sabe de algún grupo que desearía participar
tanto en el desfile o del evento en sí, llame al 543-5468. Los
puestos o casetas son gratis, pero todos los participantes deben
de proveer juegos y premios para los niños particpantes. No será
permitido el cobrar costo alguno, excepto una cantidad nominal
por comidas y/o bebidas. |
