I Miss My Dad
My dad is far away and I miss him,
My dad and my mom are divorced and I am sad,
My dad is married again,
And that makes me feel bad,
Now I never see my dad,
Because he left our the door,
I felt very sad,
And I will see him no more.

My Family
My mom is nice like mice and ice and some rice
My dad is big like a pig,
My brother is flaco, because he ate a taco
and he’s paco
My sister is thin like a pin,
My cousin is small he said he had a great fall,
My grandpa is smart so he thinks he’s a cart,
My grandma is old so I think she’s sold,
I am cool just like a fool who lives in a pool.

Carlsbad
July 17, 1995
my family and I went
to Carlsbad
in New Mexico
There were posters of rocks,
movies of bats,
and old rocks and old things to see
We walked down
to the bottom
to the very cold
to the Hall of Giants
to the Temple of the Sun
to the Caveman
and the Rock of Ages.
It was a birthday gift for me.
We got to the lunchroom
750 feet below.
Then the elevator took three minutes to take us up!
I will celebrate by reading the little book
I bought in Carlsbad every year on July 17.

The River is a Piece of Sky
From the top of a bridge
The river below
Is a piece of sky
Until you throw
A penny in
Or a pebble or two
or a cobblestone
Or a fat man’s cane
It’s a river again.

Drags
Childhood remembrances are always a drag if you’re Hispanic
I remember things like living in Canutillo
with an outside toilet
they never talk about how sad I was when I didn’t
have my mother all to myself
how good it felt to get a hot bath
my Family always enjoys going to town meetings
they still like going to L. A. for the holidays
even when we are broke
I really don’t care if we go on fancy trips
as long as I am with my Family
and having food on the table.

Death Wish
I wish I could
explode into a billion
stars when I die. It
would be a wonderful
way to die, like that.
No animal or insect would
eat me, and I wouldn’t
turn into ashes or
bones. I would be Something
instead of nothing,
When I die, and I would
be able to watch people
from where I was.

Doesn't Anybody Care?
Graffiti on our walls. Smog in our air.
What’s happening to our world?
Doesn’t anybody care?
Destruction all around us, pollution in our seas.
Open up your ears and listen to the earth plead.
Can’t we stop ourselves?
Must we ruin what God gave?
Why do we take for granted what mother nature made?
The greenhouse effect and the global warning.
When will all this end?
Think about what I have said,
so that planet Earth can mend.
So we can stop the killing,
we can stop the fighting,
We can stop this stuff if we just keep uniting.

Why
I
I live in Berlin
I am happy with my friends,
family, and city.
After all, I am German.
My mama told me,
“Wear this star.”
I asked why.
“Because we are Jewish.”
II
I have many friends.
I am happy that
I play with them every day.
After all, I was a German boy.
My friends told me
“We won’t play with you anymore.”
I asked why.
“Because you are Jewish.”
III
I have a good home.
I am happy that I live here.
After all, it is a German apartment.
The landlord said,
“Get out of here!”
I asked why.
“Because you are Jewish.”
IV
I have a family.
I am happy that
We are all together.
After all, we are a German family.
We were told,
“you are going on a train ride.”
I asked why.
He grinned, “Because you are Jewish.”
V
I live in a camp.
I am happy to be alive,
but my family is separated
Men with red bands around their arms told me
“You will never see tomorrow again.”
I asked why.
“Shut up, Jew!”
VI
I am in a room
I notice my mama is crying.
“Don’t worry,” I say,
“They’ll free us. After all, we are German.”
We hear a hissing sound
coming from the walls
I begin to cough and suffocate.
I turn and ask mama why.
Crying and hugging me,
she slowly replies
“because we…are…”

Great Granny Grow
My great granny’s name is Lona Viola
She ate lard and onion sandwiches
as she worked on the farm
in a 13-child family
and now she’s 98.
Great Granny was a Daddy’s girl
but she married the wrong guy
and had a stillborn child
and 3 other mouths to feed
And now she’s 98.
Great Granny fed hobos at her back door
in the depression
She wrung chicken’s necks
and potted meat with no preservatives
And now she’s 98.
Great Granny lost her only son in WWII
on his way home, over Tokyo Bay
My grandfather’s best friend; my grandmother’s
brother
Great Grandpa had to be sedated
Great Granny smiled through the pain
And now she’s 98
Great Granny Grow doesn’t know Grandma now
and she’s quit writing letters
But she’s peaceful, plum and pretty
And now she’s 98

Questions
Is blood thicker than water?
Is metal sharper than flesh?
Are words heavier than steel?
Are feelings more dangerous than firearms?
Is God a Savior?
Does Satan Exist?
Is Jesus the conqueror of all learned me
in the western world?
Is knowledge slavery?
Is wisdom freedom?
Is love a synonym for hate?
Can a friend be an enemy?
Can power weaken?
Is the end a beginning?

He cultivado una semilla
que espero me de su fruto
mientras tanto el sol brilante brilla
cobijando este ser diminuto.
Ante mi crece día a día
mientras yo espero impaciente
contando los días con melancolía
por algo que planté ayer,
y que dejará su huella para siempre.
Por fin llego el anhelado día
una bella rosa crece
dándole a mí vida alegría
mientras en mí por ella...
mí admiración crece.
Más ó desgracia mía,
mi bella rosa perece
pues en un día muy lluvioso
ante mí la rosa languidece.
Hoy mi alma triste está
y sólo hay melancolía
pues la rosa conmigo ya no está,
y mi alma está vacía.

Mi Gran Amigo
Sin duda alguna,
No cabe duda
que soy muy afortunada
porqué tengo un tío.
Qué es maravilloso
Y es a todo dar
El es muy suave y cariñoso
Y le encanta dar alegria y felicidad.
Cuando el día a sido muy
fastidioso llega mi tío y
empieza la felicidad
Por eso, día a día le
Pido a la Providencia
qué me conserve a mi tío
con esa alegria y fortaleza
para cuando yo crezca me
lleve a bailar.

A Los Abnegados Maestros

Tacto
Vida, tú enigmático llanto me
impulsa,
haciá el alma inmersa en el abismo,
hasta la sabiduría herida,
y el verdadero amor en el náufragio.
Tú tacto, marca las mentes por siempre,
arrebatando el odio,
¡Viva tú amor! ¡Viva tu alma!

Te Amo a Morir
Te amo a morir Mamá
