ZZ the Clown
June 5, 2004

The first ever Summer Reading Club at the Northwest Library began with fun & laughter. Children & adults were rolling in the aisles as ZZ the Clown entertained everyone with jokes & magic.

After ZZ had warmed up the crowd, a few of the children overcame their shyness to help assist him with his magic tricks. By the middle of the program, all the children were ready to help ZZ sing and dance his favorite tunes.

ZZ reminded all the children to sign up for the Summer Reading Program & enthusiastically talked about books from the library’s own collection. ZZ helped everyone’s summer off to a good start. Thanks ZZ!

Lavonya Friday
June 12, 2004

Summer Reading has never been so much fun!
Lavonya Friday, a popular storyteller from El Paso, had children watching her every move. But it was the children’s faces that told the whole story.

Bringing her magic assortment of favorite books, Lavonya reminded everyone of the joy and wonder of stories. By acting out some of her favorites, like Helen Lester’s “Tacky the Penguin,” Lavonya had children laughing and waiting for more.

Lavonya had the most reluctant of children joining her in a hilarious adaptation of the three little pigs, “The Three Little Javelinas” by Susan Lowell. With a huff & a puff, Lavonya brought the house
down on Northwest’s second Summer Reading Club event.

Snake Show 'n Tell
June 19, 2004

Snakes @ the Library?!! Real snakes?!! Slithering, sliding snakes?! Yes, real snakes.  Dominic Lanutti brought live snakes to the library in a program that was as educational & informative as it was fun.

These fascinating creatures were made a little less intimidating & mysterious as children of all ages took advantage of the opportunity to get to know a little more about them. Mr. Lanutti’s calm, reassuring manner helped parents & children feel immediately at ease.

Everyone was encouraged to ask questions & the children took home books from the library to read more about snakes, fact & fiction. After all, when is it “Lunchtime for Purple Snake,” & “What Do You Do With A Tail Like This?”

Karaoke King
June 26, 2004

Move over American Idol. Karaoke singers at the Northwest Library sang their heart out at Summer Reading Program this Saturday with the Karaoke King.

A little shy at first, children soon warmed up to the Karaoke King’s friendly and encouraging invitation to sing to their favorite songs. The library was filled with the sounds of popular artists like Brittany Spears and Selena.

Before long, the program was over and participants were already asking for a repeat performance. Now even the youngest, eagerly await the return of the Karaoke King.

Wienerschnitzel Dog and Miss Kitty
July 3, 2004

Who’s that dog?
WienerDog!

This famous canine delights children everywhere with his long floppy ears, big brown eyes and bright red costume.  Always cheerful, this hot dog hound visits libraries and schools with his storytelling companion, Miss Kitty.

Miss Kitty dances, sings, and spins her tale among a mesmerized crowd of children following her every move. Afterwards, she invites the children to join WienerDog’s Reading Club.

This fun event ended as each of the children took home a souvenir photo of themselves with their new friend and enjoyed a special hot dog lunch.
