Health education: Health Education is defined by Healthy People 2010 as any planned combination of learning experiences designed to predispose, enable, and reinforce voluntary behavior conducive to health in individuals, groups, and communities. The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) has defined ten major responsibilities of professional health educators, one of which is to communicate health and health education needs, concerns and resources.

Health promotion: "Health promotion is the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health. Optimal health is defined as a balance of physical, emotional, social, and intellectual health. Lifestyle change can be facilitated through a combination of efforts to enhance awareness, change behavior and create environments that support good health practices. (American Journal of Health Promotion, 1989,3,3,5).
