WATER RESCUE TEAM


WATER RESCUE TEAMThe Water Rescue Team is comprised of 18 Fire Department members assigned across all 3 shifts and various stations. All Team members are required to be certified to the following levels:


Fire Department - WATER RESCUE TEAM
  1. Swiftwater Technicians
  2. Open Water Scuba
  3. Advanced Open Water Scuba
  4. Rescue Diver

Skill levels and experience vary and utilization of team officers for assignments should be considered. The Water Rescue Team has the capability of effecting simultaneous events in separate locations. Team responses vary as requested from Incident Commander from a single diver for technical expertise to full callout of 18 Water Rescue Team members and Special Operations Coordinator and Assistant Coordinators.

Equipment

Description

Zodiac Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB)

13’ inflatable boat – Capacity 6 persons.  Can be used with or without motor.  Can be used for rescue of water-entrapped victims or as a water based dive platform.

Pro Johnson Boat Motor

2 stroke gasoline power plant used in conjunction with Zodiac IRB.

2001 Yamaha Wave Runner Personal Water Craft

1200 cc, 750 lb. – capacity 3 rescuers.  Rescue applications primarily open water areas such as lakes, large rivers, and ocean.  Limited capabilities in El Paso.

Underwater Metal Detector

For use in searching for submerged metal objects with profiles ranging from guns to vehicles.

Swiftwater Rescue Vests

8 vests carried on WRI to be used by on scene non-dive team members including civilian support personnel.

Various Ropes and Rescue Hardware

For use in rope rescue situations ad boat handling techniques.

EMT Basic and Paramedic Medical Bags and Equipment

For the rescue and medical intervention of civilian and department personnel.

Cellular Phone

Usually carried by Water Rescue Coordinator.

Team Member Personal Equipment

Description

All Team Members are assigned the following equipment:

Swiftwater Vest, Helmets and Semi-dry Suits

For on scene identification purposes all team member’s vests and helmets are Red in color.  This will aid in distinguishing between Water Rescue Team personnel and awareness level or support personnel.

Assorted Swiftwater Accessories

Footwear, gloves, fins, etc.

SCUBA Equipment

Equipment necessary to effect underwater search, rescue and recovery events.  This equipment includes exposure protection suits; Dry Suits for entry into contaminated waters, half mask and full-face masks, underwater communication equipment (6 underwater units and 2 surface units), buoyancy control devices (BCD’s), regulators and Scuba cylinders.

Pagers

All members are assigned departmental pagers for off-duty recall of entire team or select personnel at the discretion of the Incident Commander.
