![]() Training Chief Alan Parsons The training academy is responsible for providing classroom instruction and practical training all new firefighters, current firefighters and medics for the El Paso Fire Department. This training includes firefighting tactics and strategy, emergency medical skills, hazardous material response, emergency vehicle driver training, repelling, rescue, and other types of training. The academy is a very busy place providing training not only for the fire department but also for other agencies, potential fire department applicants, and recruiting new firefighters for the department. The academy also offers a Media class for local representatives. Media Class Recruiting The Training Academy is active in trying to recruit potential firefighters from the surrounding community. Firefighter Trainee Explorer Program The Fire Department Explorer Program is designed to help develop an awareness of Fire Department operations for young people that may be interested in becoming a firefighter. The class teaches the explorers duties, function, and techniques used by the firefighters on the job. The program also emphasizes service to the community. This program is open to people from 14 to 20. Anyone interested can contact Mr. Kenneth Mills at (915) 775-7300. Explorers Fitness Class In 2002 the Fire Department began looking at innovative ways to increase the number of female firefighters on the department without dropping the standards for acceptance. At that time the department had only 3 female firefighters on the job. This led to the formation of the Women's Fitness Class. Some of the hurdles that were identified for hiring more female firefighters were:
The El Paso Fire Department started a fitness class designed to assist in overcoming these hurdles. It helped to prepare them for the written exam and pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). The class is open to both males and females. Firefighters have designed specific exercises to help increase both upper body strength and lower body strength along with conditioning in order to help pass the CPAT.
