The City of El Paso is an equal opportunity employer. The El Paso Fire Department encourages a competitive application process in order to best serve the citizens of El Paso. Entry level positions with the Fire Department are divided into Firefighter Trainee and Certified Firefighter Trainee. Firefighter Trainee applicants are not expected to have obtained EMT or Firefighter certification.

All applicants must:

  • Be a high school graduate, or, have passed the G.E.D. or Certificate of Equivalency
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • A citizen of the United States or have legal status to work in the United States (Legal Resident Alien)
  • Texas Class “C” license or better, or, equivalent from another state
  • Be able to provide a basic CPR card upon appointment to the academy
  • One year of public contact experience

Applicants for Certified Firefighter Trainee, in addition, must also provide:

  • Proof of current EMT-B certification with the Texas Department of State Health Services
  • Proof of current Structural Firefighter certification with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection

Both certifications required of Certified Firefighter Trainee must be completed at time of appointment to the academy.
