The El Paso Fire Department operates a full service facility for the repair and maintenance of all fire apparatus, crash trucks, ambulances, support vehicles and equipment assigned to the El Paso Fire Department.
The Maintenance Division also maintains dedicated facilities for the repair and maintenance of breathing apparatus. The Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is the mask and air cylinders firefighters wear to protect them in hazardous environments. The SCBA cylinder is filled with compressed air, not oxygen. The SCBA Section fills approximately 7000 bottles a year. The SCBA Section is also equipped to provide breathing air refill services on the fire ground.
The Logistics Section procures and issues supplies necessary to maintain all of the fire stations and apparatus. Additionally, Logistics is responsible for the purchase, storage and issuing of uniforms and protective clothing used by the fire department.
The Maintenance Division is comprised of 27 full time uniformed and non-uniformed employees with an annual budget of approximately $2,856,000. D. Fire Department Apparatus Fire Pumper: Pumper 16 is a1999 Pierce Pumper. The unit is equipped with a Detroit Diesel series 60, 430 HP engine, a 1500 GPM fire Pump, 500 gallon water tank, 1500 feet of 5 inch large diameter supply hose, 1000 feet of 3 inch hose, 600 feet of 2 1/2 inch fire hose and 950 feet of 1 3/4 inch fire hose. A Pumper also carries 50 feet of ground ladders.
Aerial Platform: Ladder 11 is a 1996 Pierce PAP. A Detroit Diesel 8V92 500 HP engine powers the unit. The unit is equipped with a 100 foot elevating platform and 160 feet of ground l ladders. This unit is also equipped with a full compliment of high angle rescue equipment. Rescue and ventilation are two of the primary functions of a ladder company on the fire ground.
Quint Style Apparatus: Quint 18 is a 1999 75 foot Pierce Quint used in El Paso. It host features that are unique to Pumpers and Aerials. This Quint is equipped with a Detroit Diesel series 60 430 engine, a 1500 GPM fire pump, 500 gallon water tank, 1200 feet of 5 inch large diameter supply hose, 1000 feet of 3 inch hose, 600 feet of 2 1/2 inch fire hose and 550 feet of 1 3/4 inch fire hose. The Quint apparatus in El Paso are equipped with a minimum of 115 ft of ground ladders and an aerial device ranging in length from 65 to 100 feet in length.
Rescue: Rescue 18 is a 2001 Ford F350. Rescue Units are typically assigned at stations that house a Quint or Aerial. The rescue is used in place of the Quint or Aerial on calls that do not require the use of the aerial device. The Rescue Unit allows for quicker response time and less wear and tear on the full size apparatus.
Ambulance: 1992-1995 units are mounted on Ford chassis. In 1996 The Emergency Medical Services Department began converting the ambulance fleet to International 4700 medium duty chassis. As a result of EMS and fire department consolidation, 1999 ambulances and older are yellow in color, while the 2000 and newer ambulances are painted red and white.
New Arrivals: P-14 is a 2001 model Pierce Pumper. This unit was designed and built as a standard fire department Pumper. What sets this unit apart from other Pumpers is its state of the art Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS). CAFS converts small amounts of water to large quantities of foam similar to soap suds, which permits faster fire control with less water. Pumper 14 was purchased with a grant through Community Development.
