1400 blk Wainwright - Ruptured gas line

On Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at approx. 1045 hours, 5 units with the El Paso Fire Department responded to a ruptured gas line at the intersection of Wainwright and Gary Owen.

First units on the scene reported large amounts of natural gas leaking from two underground sights. An investigation determined that a construction crew using a back hoe had punctured the underground gas line. As a precaution fire crews evacuated 8 homes.

Crews with Texas Gas worked to stop the gas leak while fire crews stood by with charged water lines. The incident was brought under control at 1201 hours. Families were allowed to return to their homes.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

3205 Mountain Ave. - Condition 2 - House Fire

On Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at approx. 0526 hours, 7 units from the El Paso Fire Department responded to a house fire at 3205 Mountain.

First units on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the roof of the residence and placed a condition 2 on the fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire that was discovered in the attic and brought the fire under control at 0553 hours.

Firefighters determined that the fire was started by electrical wiring in the attic and was ruled as accidental.

Total damage caused by the fire was estimated at $20,000.00. Structural damage was estimated at 15,000.00 and $5,000.00 for the contents. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

1100 blk of N. El Paso St. - Condition 4 - Apartment Fire

On Monday, November 1, 2004, at approx. 2046 hours, 19 units from the El Paso Fire Dept. responded to a single story apartment on fire at 1114 N. El Paso. First units on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the roof of the house and placed a condition 4 on the incident. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Fire Investigators with the Fire Marshals office responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by a faulty fireplace that had been placed out-of-service and ruled it as accidental. The fireplace was venting directly into the attic. Total damage caused by the fire was estimated at $50,000.00

All occupants evacuated prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. There were no injuries to civilians or fighters.

Fire department officials would like to remind the public to use caution when starting up all heating appliances and fireplaces this winter and to get a professional to inspect them before starting them up to avoid accidents like these.

The Red Cross was called out to assist some of the occupants.

7900 blk Viscount - Condition 4 - Apartment Fire

October 28th 2004 - At approximately 3:58 in the morning firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the 7900 block of Viscount. The fire occurred during the early morning hours while other residents were sleeping. The fire involved the second and third story of the apartment. They both sustained significant damage. Adjoining apartments also received some damage.

A primary response was dispatched which included 4 engine companies, 2 aerial companies, 2 Battalion Chiefs, a Deputy Chief and Hazmat 1. More units were dispatched for staging and used during the incident. The Assistant Chief of Operations also responded.

The first unit arrived on-scene within two minutes after receiving the alarm. The majority of fire was knocked down within fifteen minutes of the initial alarm,however it took about fifty minutes until the incident was brought under control. No residents were injured in the blaze.

10400 blk Ashwood - Condition 3 - House Fire

Firefighters from 'B' shift responded to a Condition 3 Fire in the 10400 block of Ashwood at 1059 hours on October 25th, 2004. The first engine company arrived on scene within two minutes. The fire was brought under control at 1111 hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

12600 Block Crystal Ridge - Condition 3 - House fire

At approximately 4:20 pm on July 27, 2004 units responded to the 12600 block of Crystal Ridge for a residential fire. Upon arrival fire units found smoke and flame coming from the second story and declared the incident a Condition 3 fire. The house was occupied at the time and all the residents made it out safely. The fire was declared under control at approximately 4:38 pm.

6600 Block Doniphan - Condition 4 fire - Transmission Repair Shop Fire

At approximately 3:45 pm on May 7th, 2004 units responded to the 6600 block of Doniphan Drive to a fire in an automotive transmission repair shop. Upon arrival Pumper 2 advised this was a condition 4 fire and requested more units. Although this fire took place just out of the city limits firefighters responded and quickly put out the fire along with crews from the West Valley Fire Department. This fire spread quickly due to the winds and involved the entire structure. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
