Permit Considerations
Buildings used for High Piled Combustible Storage (HPCS) may involve severe fire challenges both to people who work and visit these sites and to the men and women who are called to fight fires in them. Life safety issues for the Fire Department as well as building occupants are a major factor in considering the special requirements of such buildings. In addition the monetary value of the building and material stored within can put a heavy load on a business if lost. The HPCS requirements should then be considered a winning situation for everyone involved.
What is HPCS?
High Piled Combustible Storage is the storage of combustible materials where such storage is over 12 feet high in racks or pallets, or 15 feet high in packaged piles. For special commodities the critical height may be as low as 6 feet.
What are the special requirements for HPCS?
The special requirements are numerous and can be very confusing at first. We recommend a detailed inspection by our inspector followed by a meeting in which all requirements specific to your building will be discussed. It is at no cost to you and can be set up through the Request Form (coming soon) or by calling (915) 771-1090.
Is there any way I can get around the requirements of HPCS?
Yes, the only way to get around the requirements specific to HPCS is to lower the height of your stock. HPCS comes into play when your stock is above the 12 feet in racks or pallets, or 15 feet in packed piles. Under this height your building is considered an ordinary storage warehouse.
