EPFD holds annual Youth Camp

From July 18-20, the Training Academy played host to the annual EPFD Youth Academy. Twenty-two teenagers ages 13-17 took part in the highly interactive, hands-on camp that exposed the kids to the El Paso Fire Department.

"We are always excited to offer this unique opportunity for local youth to gain an understanding of fire and life safety issues," PIO Carlos Briano said. "While developing valuable skills used in search and rescue operations, the teenagers learn valuable team-building skills and become an advocate for safety and the El Paso Fire Department."

The teenagers who participated this year were Dante Ahumada, Diego Estrada, Celeste Castro, Sebastian Galvan, Araliz Gandara, Brandon Garcia, Julio Garcia, Jessica Gomez, Nicholas Gonzalez, Ashley Herrera, Andrea Huerta, Perla Lujan, Bryan Mena, Javier Mier, Joe Murillo, Damian Puente, Mario Ramirez, Pablo Rangel, Joel Rivas, Daniel Sanchez, Carlos Valles and Daniel Villagomez. The activities included first-aid, bandaging/splinting, fire extinguisher training, catching a hydrant, dawning PPE and SCBA, hands-only CPR, physical training, water wars and a rappelling and burn demonstrations.

"The camp was a great experience," Ahumada said. "It's something new I always wanted to try. I'm glad I did. Now I know I definitely want to pursue a degree in Public Safety."
