Code Violation of the Month: Prohibited Signs
Effort to Increase Community Awareness of Laws Addressing Blight and Nuisances

El Paso, Texas – This month the City of El Paso Code Compliance Division will be targeting Prohibited Signs violations as part of its Code Violation of the Month.

The Code Violation of the Month effort highlights a violation each month to increase community awareness of laws addressing blight and nuisances.

The violation for November is Prohibited Signs, as defined in 20.18.140 and Temporary on-premise signs in 20.18.500 of the El Paso Municipal Code.

Under the code, it is prohibited to place signs – such as garage sale signs or election signage – on utility poles, traffic control devices, sidewalks, medians or other public property. Violations are punishable by a Class C citation.

The ordinance does allow for placing free-standing signs made of wood, metal, plastic, or cardboard no larger than 5 square feet and no greater than 36 inches in height in a parkway between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Temporary on-premise signs are allowed with limitations. Examples are the “black” portable signs, real estate signs, banners and inflatable signs. Permits and certain requirements must be met in order to use such signs.

Code violations may be reported at www.elpasotexas.gov/environmental_services or by calling the Code Compliance Division at (915) 774-4500.
