The City of El Paso is the employer of choice for many citizens. The benefits and privileges afforded to employees are competitive. Employee benefits include 12 days of paid vacation per year, 15 days of paid sick leave per year and four (4) personal days per year. The City provides nine (9) paid holidays, including the employee’s birthday!
Employees and their dependents receive medical and dental insurance and basic life insurance ($50,000 for non-uniformed employees and $2,000 for spouse at no cost). Other benefits for City employees include Disability Insurance, Supplemental Life Insurance, Deferred Compensation
and access to an on-site Wellness Center.
The City encourages employee development and excellence of performance by offering Tuition Assistance for approved courses. The City also offers an extensive list of training courses to employees each month which include; Customer Service, Ethics, Communication Skills, Process Improvement, Basic Nutrition and Microsoft Office Software classes, just to name a few.
Another privilege the City provides is access to the Internet to assist employees in conducting their job duties and work assignments. Employees are allowed use of their work computer while on break. Employees may access non-job related sites as long as the content is not offensive and the use is strictly incidental and constitutes no more then 15 minutes of an eight-hour workday. The privileges of City employment also come with responsibility and accountability. Employees are expected to adhere to the City of El Paso’s “Internet Acceptable Use Policy” and accessing and/or knowingly retrieving or storing obscene and pornographic materials on City equipment is a terminable offense. Additionally, illegal activity, such as gambling, or any other activity that infringes on the services we provide to our citizens, is strictly prohibited and may result in termination of employment. Other offenses that may result in termination include
- Using, selling, manufacturing, possessing or distributing any illegal drugs or alcohol, or being under the influence of alcohol or inhalants while on the job, either on or off City premises.
- Carrying a handgun, with or without a state license, or other deadly weapon on City premises. (This does not apply to Certified Peace Officers or hired Security Guards).
- An unexcused absence from duty for a period of three or more successive days.
- A violation of the City’s Ethics Ordinance.
- The intentional misuse of City Resources for personal benefit.
- Accepting or soliciting gifts or favors.
- Splitting or sequencing purchases to circumvent the competitive bidding process.
On May 1, 2009, becoming a part of our dynamic organization got easier! Interested candidates can now view current City job openings and apply for City jobs online using NEOGOV. This new online application process is fast and easy and since May 1, 2009, City job postings have generated over 58, 000 hits and over 5,300 online job applications have been submitted!
As a City employee, your opinions and suggestions are greatly valued. In July of 2009, the Human Resources Department launched an Employee Opinion survey. The purpose of this survey is to provide employees with an opportunity to communicate their opinions about their employment experience with the City. The results from the survey will be used to help plan for a better future. The City understands that planning for a better future cannot occur without the honest, thoughtful and constructive input from employees.
