Comments: The Zoo's Annual Elephant Festival celebrates man's 5000 year relationship with the largest land animal on earth. The Elephant Festival weekend is a fun and educational experience for the entire family, with live entertainment,special exhibits, and unusual opportunities for zoo visitors. Kids won prizes playing the elephant focused Safari-Rama game. Other activities included watching and asking questions at the daily elephant training demonstration and program, an Elephant Walk Self-Guided Tour, 'Behind the Scenes' tours of the elephant facility, and Produce Hunts inside the Elephant Exhibit. Proceeds from 'Behind the Scenes' tours, the 'Produce Hunt', the sale of Juno and Savannah Elephant Art prints and paper hat elephant ears for kids, were later used to support the El Paso Zoological Society's Conservation Fund project support of Asian elephant conservation efforts in Sumatra's Tesso Nilo National Park project. A conservation action center was also set up to help people learn how to 'take action' to protect elephants and help conserve their habitats around the world. Visitors learned about Asian elephants and the problems facing those in Sumatra's Tesso Nilo National Park because of habitat loss due to deforestation for firewood, small scale farming and palm oil plantation establishment. Visitors also learned about how they could help other elephant conservation efforts, by reviewing projects being funded by the Asian Elephant Conservation Act and information posted on other websites. Vistors were also encouraged to write their representative in Congress in support of the Asian Elephant Conservation Act.

Comments: An additional 3000 copies of this bilingual, large format pamphlet were printed up. The pamphlet is used by visitors to explore the zoo on their own and learn about endangered species at the zoo. The pamphlet enables the zoo visitor to follow numbered elephant footprints painted on the public path, to various endangered Asian animal exhibits. The guide provides information on what being endangered actually means, and the benficial role of flagship species in helping other animals and their habitats gain protection. Other information includes the current status of wild elephants, and the various threats to wild tapirs, lion-tailed macaques, Malayan sun bears and Indo-Chinese tigers. Information is also provided regarding the WWF's project to help save elephants in Sumatra's Tesso Nilo National Park, and guests are encouraged to make a donation to the El Paso Zoological Society's Conservation Fund, in support of the Zoo's participation in this project.

Comments: The primary focus of this event was habitat conservation and education. As usual, this year's event included the partcipation of a number of other conservation related organizations such as the local water utility, the state wildlife department and the local chapter of Master Naturalists, among others. A Conservation Maze activity area was set-up, where people went through the maze, partcipated in activities, and learned about various conservation issues at multiple activity tables; guests ultimately earned participation awards such as Asian elephant conservation postcards and Thick-billed parrot conservation bookmarks. Petition drive stations were also set-up to have guest help aid in preserving the habitat of the Amur leopard in Russia. Over 500 signatures were collected and ultimately snt to Russian President Putin.

School children also collect pennies to help support the SSP's cooperative efforts with Mexican researchers and conservationists [one thousand dollars was provided for Mexican colleauges in-situ field project work].
