Concern for the Earth at Earth Day Weekend event

The El Paso Zoo and the El Paso Solar Energy Association sponsored Earth Day Weekend at the Zoo on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23. As part of the special event, the Zoo Education Office organized an Endangered Species Awareness Program at the Asian elephant exhibit. Volunteers highlighted the rapidly growing endangered species list by solemnly reading off the names of over 15,000 endangered species from around the world. See video
Local car dealers displayed some of their new hybrid vehicles and special exhibits were presented by Roots and Shoots youth volunteers, El Paso Solar Energy Association volunteers, and staff and volunteers from a variety of other organizations including: El Paso Water Utilities, El Paso Electric, Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, Chihuahuan Desert Wildlife Rescue, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Keep El Paso Beautiful, Sierra Club, El Paso Ridgewalkers, TXDOT, Tiera Solis, and NASA.
In addition to the Zoo's daily educational programs at the Sea Lion Exhibit (10:45am and 2:45pm), the Asian Elephant Exhibit (noon) there was live entertainment on the America's Aviary Stage featuring performances by the San Patricios Irish Traditional Group and the musical group Cieba.
