El Paso Zoo Event Calendar - 2008

A LOOK INTO OUR EL PASO ZOO’S FUTURE:

The “Passport to Africa” exhibit will help the Zoo meet its mission of reconnecting people to their natural world and represent a major quality of life asset to the city of El Paso by doubling the zoo in size to 36 acres, featuring African animals, plus two educational facilities, a new entry plaza (opening late 2008), a train, a zoo gift shop, and a new restaurant that can cater large events. A Reptile House in the shape of a turtle will be completed in the spring of 2009. The African animal exhibits will open in 2010 with animals, including lions, zebras, giraffes and Meerkats.

Coming to the Africa Savannah in 2008-2009!
The El Paso Water Utilities Discovery Education Center will feature a fun classroom and exhibits for elementary school groups to learn about our Chihuahuan desert and water conservation. Zoo educators and volunteers will present a variety of animal encounter programs for visitors on weekends. The center will include special displays about water conservation, a desert spring exhibit with live animals, computer learning stations, and a research library.

The El Paso Electric Renewable Energy Demonstration Project “Windows to the Wild Outpost” is an exhibit modeled after a real Africa research station complete with a colony of meerkats; the playful mongooses seen on Animal Planet's Meerkat Manor. Solar and wind energy will provide power to the station while educators and zoo volunteers will help visitors learn about renewable energy and stewardship of these resources which are so important to people and wildlife around the world.
