El Paso's telecommunications network offers state-of-the-art voice and data transmission facilities to almost one-quarter of a million residential and business customers in the area.

El Paso’s sophisticated telecommunications infrastructure includes:

  • An interlocking system of digital networks
  • Fiber optics serving all major industrial, commercial and residential areas
  • Strategic positioning on all major fiber optic networks
  • Satellite communications
  • Electronic switching on 100 percent of local access lines
  • Strategic communications alliances with Mexico
  • State-of-the-art data transmission infrastructure.

El Paso is strategically located on all major digital networks and is served by Southwestern Bell, the local exchange provider; Xspedius, a competitive access provider; and, a variety of long-distance carriers. AT&T has two points of presence in the city; MCI intends to make El Paso its major telecommunications hub into Mexico; and, the backbone of Sprint's 100 percent fiber optic network runs through the area.

Southwestern Bell, in an aggressive expansion of their network, has installed digital switches in all central offices and connected them with fiber optic cable. This improvement has served to create an infrastructure that couples a high degree of flexibility with reliability of service. There are currently 13 central offices in El Paso, all of which possess a diverse routing of fiber.

Among the types of service available in El Paso are industry standard T1 / DS1, allowing high capacity access for large volume customers using a 24-circuit high speed digital stream with a total volume of 1.544 Mbps. Also available is DS3 data transmission; comprised of 28 -T1 lines; it brings voice, data and video transmission to a new level of speed, accuracy and information handling capacity.
