Preparations are underway on a $6 million dollar renovation project on the plaza of the Judson F. Williams Convention Center. “We are trying to create a more visitor-friendly environment,” said Bill Blaziek, general manager of the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “Once this project is complete, we will be able to support year round exhibits and outdoor events.”
The renovation consists of the demolition of the cooling towers, water-feature, kiosk and existing top surface of the plaza. A new restroom facility, drainage system, pavers, and surface will be installed, and the usable plaza square footage will be increased. Additionally, a new aluminum and steel structure
with polycarbonate paneling will be installed as a shade device covering approximately 15,000 square feet. This shade structure will also include lighting and a misting system.
