United States Post Office
209-219 Mills Avenue
El Paso, Texas 79901
This Post Office, located one block from San Jacinto Plaza, is a massively scaled public building
designed by architect James A. Wetmore. Constructed in 1917, and in continuous operations since then, the two-story building is considered one of the most noteworthy eclectic Roman styles in far West Texas.
With its dignified classical detailing and academic proportions, it still remains a strong visual landmark. The building is constructed of sandstone and concrete ashlar masonry and retains its original exterior wood windows and six giant ionic columns supporting the front portico. The interior lobby is a two-story space covered with a massive, paneled dome and a stained-glass skylight.
The domed lobby, in conjunction with the exterior classicism, reflects American civics in a manner similar to public buildings in Washington, D.C.
