Sun Metro Begins Shelter Replacement Effort

Sun Metro will start replacing old bus stop shelters with new shelters throughout the City of El Paso beginning this week.

The replacement of the shelters is part of an ongoing effort by the City's Mass Transit Department to improve the bus rider's experience.

Riders at each of the stops are asked to be patient during this transition period.

Former shelters that are salvageable will be refurbished and used at other bus stop locations throughout the city that currently do not have any shelter.

About 200 shelters will be replaced or added to Sun Metro bus stops by the end of this year, increasing the total number of bus shelters to more than 340. An additional 100 shelters are planned for 2011.

The complete cost for all the materials and the placement of the 200 shelters, including sidewalk improvements, is $4.5 million, of which $2.5 million are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
