Free Training Program for Businesses Operating in the Empowerment Zone
The City of El Paso will host a FREE Training Program on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Armijo Recreation Center (700 E. 7th Ave – Room 205) to assist businesses operating in a federally-recognized economic area known as the Empowerment Zone. The goal of the workshops is to help businesses obtain certification as a Historically Underutilized Business (HUB), and teach on how to access money made available by Congress through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The workshops will explain the qualification criteria as well as the advantages provided to businesses which receive this designation. Achieving HUB certification means easier access and greater exposure to government contract opportunities.
What is a Historically Underutilized Business?
A HUB is a business which is 51% or more owned by a minority or by a woman. Taking advantage of the opportunity to receive HUB certification will help to grow a business as well as find new customers and contracts. Texas governmental policy requires that all state agencies make a good faith effort to contract with HUBS for construction, services, or commodities purchases.
State agencies actively solicit HUBs to bid on state purchasing and public works contracts. Prime contractors also will seek out HUBs to notify of their subcontracting opportunities. With money made available through the ARRA Act, there is no better time to get the certification than now. Receiving a certification as a Historically Underutilized Business is one important way to increase a business!
