    Downtown Project Construction Free for the Holidays

    Downtown Project Construction Free for the HolidaysTo facilitate traffic flows during the holiday season, the last construction required in the project reconstructing several streets in the Downtown area will not initiate until early 2008. The City initiative targeting the reconstruction of six major streets in the downtown area nears completion with construction on the last stretch of Franklin from Oregon to Mesa having opened to traffic and work along the western portion of Santa Fe from Pasiano to Loop 375 recently completed.
    • Last temporary closure requires work at the intersection of Mesa and Main
    • Construction will NOT begin until after the holidays
    • Expected construction period of 6-8 weeks
    • Overall project still ahead of schedule
    Project Background
    Effective February of 2006, the Central Business District Phase III Project progressed in ongoing phases of construction improving the operational and aesthetic conditions of the following six streets:
    • Franklin Avenue from Campbell St. to Santa Fe St
    • Mesa Street from Main Ave. to San Antonio Ave.
    • Mills Avenue from Campbell St. to Mesa St.
    • Oregon Street from Main Ave. to Wyoming Ave.
    • Stanton Street from San Antonio Ave. to Wyoming Ave.
    • Santa Fe Street from Paisano Dr. to Loop 375
    The scope of work for each segment of the project consisted of the complete overhaul of the street infrastructure and featured the replacement of existing asphalt pavement, sidewalks, driveways, existing traffic signals and street lighting. The improvement project also upgraded all existing water and sanitary sewer lines.

      As part of an ongoing initiative to provide enhanced customer service at the One-Stop-Shop, the Development Services Department now features the QuikTrac Inspection Hotline.
    • Miller Circle/Orndorf Drive Street & Drainage Improvements Begin
      The Miller Circle and Orndorf Drive project began in early November, providing various street & drainage improvements.
    • Storm 2006 Capital Project Updates
      As progress continues in the citywide project addressing the critical repair and reconstruction priorities that resulted from Storm 2006, repairs have initiated on Castellano Drive and the second phase of the Westside Flood Damage Improvements Project reaches channel reconstruction.
    • HOMEOWNERS: Don’t throw away your Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs RECYCLE THEM!
      Environmental Services will begin accepting Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) from your home at the Citizen Collection Stations as part of the Household Hazardous Waste Program. Due to the low levels of mercury in the bulbs, recycling the bulbs is the preferred method of disposal.
    • It’s Harvest Time
      Just after the first freeze, which usually happens right after Thanksgiving, the El Paso Street Department will be gearing up to begin the first harvest, of approximately 500 trees, from the City of El Paso’s tree farm.

      This collection, which includes works that span throughout Hartley's career, will show from December 2, 2007 through February 24, 2008.
    • Parks & Recreation Celebrates Musical 12 Days of Christmas
      The 12 Days of Christmas, which is a Holiday Concert Series featuring area singers, will soon begin at the San Jacinto Plaza, located downtown at 111 Mills. The events will be at 5:00 p.m. on weekday evenings.
