Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) Being Updated

Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) Being UpdatedIn keeping with a national effort to modernize existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently released the proposed new FIRMs and the accompanying Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for El Paso County.

While the preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps are NOT effective until a FEMA expedited process is completed, the proposed changes are extensive, representing a difference of approximately 25,000 parcels being added to the floodplain. Areas of highest impact include the properties along the river valley and the Green Belt levees in the Northeast. The City, in conjunction with local officials and area engineers, is making every effort to closely review and accurately assess the proposed changes in the FIRMs and FIS prior to their formal adoption.

As an important part of initiating this process, the first public meeting conducted by FEMA representatives and local officials took place on August 22, 2007 to provide for an informational briefing. Property owners now have the opportunity to review the proposed maps and will have a 90-day appeal/protest period initiated by FEMA within approximately 30 days to present technical information refuting the proposed flood zones.

For any questions related to this process or for general information, residents may contact the National Flood Insurance Program Information Line at 1 (800) 427-4661.

Please note, any individual with questions specific to their property or insurance policy are encouraged to confer with their personal insurance agent.
