Sun Metro to Purchase New Buses
Sun Metro Mass Transit Department received approval from the Mass Transit Board Tuesday, July 25, 2006, to enter into an agreement with Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to purchase thirty-five new 40-foot low floor compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. The total purchase amount is $13,879,644.54 which also includes spare parts. The cost of each bus is $391,147.32 ($401,147.32 net a discount of $10,000.00 each); and spare parts in the amount of $189,488.34.
The new units will be ordered by August 1, 2006 with a delivery date of March 31, 2007. These buses will be 40 feet in length and feature: accommodations for two wheelchair passengers; electronically controlled interior lighting system; ramps for boarding that allow for easier ADA access; kneeling option that lowers the right side of the bus for easier boarding and de-boarding; two-toned flooring for the visually impaired; exterior electronic destination signs on the front, both sides and rear of the bus; interior destination signs; ergonomically designed driver's stations; and operate on dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) powered engines.
The funding for these buses will come from a combination of federal and local funding. Federal funds in the amount of $4,531,901 have been allocated for this purchase with a required local match of $928,221. The local match and remaining amount needed for the purchase will be funded through a lease purchase financing agreement through Banc of America Leasing & Capital, LLC, a principal amount not to exceed $10,000,000.
The Mass Transit Board also authorized City Manager Joyce Wilson to direct staff to begin the necessary procurement procedures required for the leasing of up to fifteen (15) buses for temporary use by the Mass Transit Department. These units will be secured for emergency purposes only.
Sun Metro provides more than 40,000 passenger riders, over 21,600 miles, along 64 routes and stopping at 3,060 bus stops daily.
