Meerkat Manor: El Paso Zoo Style
Have you seen the Animal Planet show Meerkat Manor? How cute!
It follows the day-to-day life of a family of meerkats ruled by Flower the matriarch. The ups, the downs, the comedy and tragedy of these often amusing creatures of the South African Savannah. They're used to rocky grasslands, intense heat and little rain. And when it comes to mealtime they chow down on various roots, fruits, rodents, geckos and poisonous scorpions.
Well, it hardly rains in El Paso and we have plenty of scorpions to share and in the not so distant future, the El Paso Zoo will have its own colony of meerkats.
More like a mob of meerkats. That's what they call them - like a gaggle of goose or a pride of lions. And the El Paso Zoo will be married to the mob in the next year as the expansion of Africa takes shape. The little creatures related to the mongoose family are just one of a number of new animals the Sun City will welcome to our Zoo for your kids to see.
Speaking of "new to the zoo," we are just waiting for July 28th, when we get to introduce you to Inca. She's tall, dark and single. Ok, forget the single part but did we mention furry? What is she? You'll just have to wait until the ribbon cutting on her new exhibit to find out. Here's a hint. We'll try to make a real "spectacle" that day. Getting any warmer?
