Home Improvements Start with DSD: Carports
With summer vacation to begin, home improvements are on the rise. The Development Services Department (DSD) would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that permits are required for most home improvements, including carports.
Carports are among the leading improvements homeowners utilize in adding value to their property and protecting their vehicles from the heat throughout the summer months. The Development Services Department asks the community to contact them first in order to provide critical information when considering adding a carport to their home. Those planning on hiring a registered contractor to build a carport should review the following tips to better facilitate the permitting process:
- A contractor must be registered with the City for permit issuance. To check if a potential contractor is registered contact DSD or click on the following link, http://www.elpasotexas.gov/building_services/contractor2.asp
- DSD will verify and clarify all zoning and building information needed
- Do not allow an unregistered contractor to build a carport without first obtaining a plan review and building permit from the Building Permits and Inspections Division
- A carport application fee is $90
Home improvements are an important aspect of home ownership. When planning a carport addition to a home, allow the City's Development Services Department to assist in obtaining a permit and in the legalizing and realizing of a project.
