Club Rec Summer Camp and Mad Science

Children within the El Paso Empowerment Zone are "Mad" about Science!

Mad Science® of El Paso and the Parks & Recreation Department are teaming up to spark the imagination and curiosity of children within the Empowerment Zone. This summer, children will be provided with exciting, live, interactive activities that instill a clear understanding of what science is really about. Children will explore the outer reaches of space and rocketry through hands-on activities and demonstrations. Space suit is not required but seats are limited!

Enrique Valadez, the Recreation Service Superintendent, is glad that the city government, local businesses, educators and ordinary citizens are working together to bring children high-quality after-school and summer programs. "I'm looking forward to a long-term partnership to benefit the children and hope that they'll grow up as a highly talented workforce contributing to the economic growth of this city," said Valadez.

The following Club Rec sites, from June 5th to July 28th, will be offering Mad Science programs: Armijo, Chihuahuita, Seville, San Juan, Houston Elementary and Hilos de Plata.

President Bush in his January 31, 2006 State of the Union address announced "an American Competitive Initiative to encourage innovation throughout our economy and to give our nation's children a firm grounding in math and science." The initiative includes encouraging children toward math and science, and ensuring standards that are rigorous enough to compete with other nations.

"Professor Krypton Ken" the Chief Mad Scientist in El Paso (who in real-life is a former engineering professor) says, "Mad Science® programs are correlated to the national science standards and TEKS, and are helpful in empowering children with inquiry, problem-solving skills to face a scientific and technological world. We support innovation and competitive initiatives that inspire young people toward science, technology, engineering and math."

This Mad Science-Club Rec summer experience is made possible with the generous support of the El Paso Empowerment Zone Corporation. The El Paso Empowerment Zone Corporation is creating a grassroots, community-based system of long-term economic opportunities, improving the quality of life through self-sufficiency, emphasizing strong cultural, educational and family values.

Mad Science® of El Paso is part of the Mad Science® Group, an international franchise organization based in Montreal, Canada (www.madscience.org), that offers after-school science enrichment programs in schools, day-cares, community centers and camps through over 206 franchisees and 20 countries, reaching over 6.2 million children, parents and teachers annually. Mad Science® Production has a permanent show at the Kennedy Space Visitor Center in Florida.
